"A Divide Of Two Halves - Racing the Tour Divide for Love Hope Strength Foundation" by Lydia Franklin

Lydia Franklin releases her third fundraising book for LHS this week full of nods to Mike Peters, The Alarm and LHS as well as having a foreword from a certain Mr. James Stevenson, as someone who had read her previous books covering her cycling ventures I was eager to read the third.....I wasn't disappointed!

“If it all went to plan it wouldn’t be an adventure. If it was easy it wouldn’t be an adventure. Woo hoo, this is an adventure!”

For those of you that don’t know Lydia there’s probably a couple of things you should know. She’s  very driven and regularly undertakes challenges that most would consider insane while all the time fundraising and promoting the music centric cancer charity Love Hope Strength Foundation. The other thing you need to know is that she doesn’t do failure! So having previously cycled the fabled Route 66 & the length of New Zealand (both trips documented in the books “Putting the metal to the pedal” & “Racing the Phoenix” respectively) her latest adventure was to take on the Tour Divide, a solo time challenge, starting in Canada then crossing the border into America.

Now I won’t get into the whole route and mechanics of the tour divide as to be honest it confused me a bit but essentially, big climbs, very hard roads and you’d need to be insane to really contemplate doing it in normal situations let alone on a pretty tight schedule as you have limited time booked as holiday before you have to return to the UK back to the day job! It would have been a massive feat even if everything had gone to plan and needless to say it didn’t! So *spoiler alert* Lydia is forced to abandon the challenge as she would run out of time …. This to me is a more interesting premise as it allowed some freedom to explore places she wouldn’t have been able to see whilst also rationalising the decision to end her race early. As someone once sung “Failure isn’t about falling down, failure is staying down” and that’s something that Lydia was most definitely not going to do!

Throughout her whole trip Lydia wrote blogs each day in order for those at home to be able to follow her progress, make sure she hadn’t been eaten by bears (they feature in the story and provide many a moment that made me smile!) and also to help promote her fundraising goal. These blogs for a large part of the book, are very easy to read and because they were written in the moment you really do feel what she was going through on any given day, her state of mind, levels of exhaustion and any mechanical challenges from the bike. Nothing has been clouded by memory or blurred in any way so it is the closest chance of being in the moment you will get. Each chapter has an update at the end where Lydia reviews that day and her memories of it, sometimes expanding of something or just reflecting on the trials she faced.

One thing that struck me was the random kindness of strangers that litter the book, from those that give help, advice, mental support, encouragement, water, even a place to stay without wanting anything in return. It’s all too easy to be cynical in this day and age and we forget there are many people out there willing to help a total stranger.

As the trip concludes you really empathise with Lydia as she battles getting back to the routine of everyday life far from the adventure, rattlesnakes and bears! No doubt her next adventure is already being planned…..go with the Crazy & good luck Lydia!

As a kind of footnote at the end of the book there’s 26 pages from a Facebook Q & A session that answer many questions that you may well find yourself pondering while reading “A Divide Of Two Halves”. This made for interesting reading as well as giving you something extra after the book had concluded. For the avid cyclist there is also a full breakdown of the bike Lydia used, what equipment, kit and yes even clothing….or lack of!

The Phoenix Rises!

LHS UK lead volunteer Lydia Franklin's second book "Racing The Phoenix" is now available in both physical and kindle editions from Amazon.

The book covers the fundraising journey that Lydia undertook earlier this year cycling solo from North To South New Zealand and "it is also a story about Love Hope and Strength, the places it leads you and the people you meet along the way. Ultimately however, it is a story about life and how we must make the most of every opportunity we have."

Foreword by Jules Jones Peters.

One Challenge At A Time....New Zealand

In 2013 Lydia Franklin cycled 2400 miles along Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. raising money and awareness for Love Hope Strength as she went. She updated a blog along the way which was later used as the basis for her first book "Putting The Metal To The Pedal" which was an enlightening and empowering glimpse into what she went through on that gruelling journey.

Since that time Lydia has been planning her next challenge, again for LHS, and at the beginning of February she will be cycling the length of New Zealand (not known as being the flattest country in the world!) starting at Cape Reinga on the 1st and ending in Bluff hopefully on the 27th. As with her previous challenge there will also be an end of the road gig (see poster for details).

She will once again be documenting her trip on her One Challenge At A Time blog page which you can find HERE!

For Facebook click HERE!

You can also sponsor/donate etc at her Just Giving page which you can find HERE!

Share the info above with as many friends & family as you can.....support can take many shapes and I know Lydia will appreciate any messages she gets along the way!

Lydia Franklin Route 66 book published

"Putting The Metal To The Pedal : Cycling Route 66 with Love Hope and Strength" the book chronicling Lydia Franklins epic charity event which saw her cycle the length of America's famed Route 66 is now available to buy. The book can be purchased (or gifted!) on Kindle via Amazon for £3.44 (with the paperback coming within the next four weeks) or as a physical paperback directly from the publisher Lulu priced at £7.99 from the links below.  Proceeds will go to LHS and both versions have a foreword by Mike Peters.

Over to Lydia...

Putting the metal to the pedal is first of all a book about an idea that expanded into an incredible challenge of cycling 100 miles a day, 2400 miles in 24 days from Chicago to LA on Route 66 to raise money for Love Hope Strength Foundation. It took me through 8 different states and saw me battle exhaustion, headwinds, torrential rain, freezing cold and the occasional bout of homesickness.

The support and goodwill from family, friends and strangers made it a journey of a lifetime, raising £6500 and awareness of the work of Love Hope Strength Foundation.

Ultimately it is proof that in order to really live you have to let go of the fear...

LHS donor drive amongst MPs (the Parliament type not the Mike Peters type!)

Mike Peters has posted a request to all fans to help support a LHS donor drive amongst MP's that LHS are running on Tuesday June 4th. Fans are requested to contact their local MP asking them to attend the stem cell donor recruitment drive and sign up.

You can contact your MP via the web site Write To Them at http://www.writetothem.com/

The template that LHS would like you to use for your letter can be found below :

Dear (Please fill in the name of your MP)

Stem Cell Donor Recruitment Event, Portcullis House - Tuesday 4th June 2013

As a member of your consistency, I am writing to inform you about a great new partnership between British charity 'Love Hope Strength Foundation'  (LHSF) and 'Delete Blood Cancer UK' and ask if you will register as a potential stem cell donor at the Love Hope Strength / Delete Blood Cancer Donor Recruitment event in Room 'R' at Portcullis House on 4th June, and thus provide an exemplary platform to showcase the start of this great work in the UK.

As you may be aware, half the people in Britain who need a lifesaving stem cell donor do not find a match and it is my hope that this new partnership will hugely grow the number of UK donors and significantly improve the chances of patients across the UK and worldwide by having a UK donor.

Delete Blood Cancer UK's age bracket for potential donors is 17 - 55 which also means that most people in Britain are now eligible to become a donor. It's a quick and simple process for those in this age bracket and in good general health and only takes a few minutes - Potential donors can fill in a simple consent form and swab their cheeks with a cotton swab to determine their tissue type. Their details are then stored anonymously on a national register.

It is my hope that you will represent our community, register and further inspire other MP's, individuals and families alike to become potential life savers (and to further raise awareness that being a stem cell donor in this day and age can be as simple as giving blood and in most cases virtually painless).

You may be aware of our joint Party leaders support for the other heartfelt campaigns in the past, for example when the Prime Minister, Ed Milliband and others backed the late Pride of Britain winner Alice Pyne's bone marrow donor campaign in 2011. I hope that on June 4th at the Parliamentary donor drive, aimed at UK Members of Parliament in Room 'R' at Portcullis House between 2 and 6pm, you will find time to join some prominent British musicians, cancer patients, survivors and celebrities in sending a unified message to the whole country and become a potential stem cell donor that day, thus providing a role model for the rest of the house, and for the country and our community.

Love Hope Strength and Delete Blood Cancer are hoping to encourage and support thousands of people in the UK to become potential stem cell donors and to give blood cancer patients in need of a donation a second chance at life.

Love Hope Strength Foundation was begun by Mike Peters who is the lead singer with two internationally renowned British rock bands (The Alarm and Big Country). Mike is also a Leukaemia survivor who may one day need a transplant and after his diagnosis in 2005, he set up LHSF to help support those British nurses and doctors who saved his life. The first LHSF event began with Snowdon Rocks in Wales in 2007 to support the North Wales Cancer Centre where Mike Peters was and still is being treated. That same year the charity was registered in the USA and began rolling out the Love Hope Strength message via musical expeditions to Mt. Everest, Kilimanjaro and Mt. Fuji, building cancer centres in Tanzania and Nepal for those less fortunate than ourselves in Britain, along the way. In 2012, LHSF partnered with Delete Blood Cancer in the USA and began hosting successful donor drives across America.

In three years, this unique partnership in the USA has inspires 35,000 new donors to join the registry (via LHSF) and discovered over 500 potentially lifesaving matches. Delete Blood Cancer UK, is part of the DKMS Germany family of organisations worldwide which was founded more than 20 years ago around the case of blood cancer patient Mechtild Harf. Her need inspired her husband Peter Harf and her physician Prof. Gerhard Ehninger to set up DKMS to provide a source of donors worldwide for people in Mechtild's situation. Today, DKMS works internationally and has recruited more than 3.8 million registered donors so far and gave 36,000 patients a second chance of life. They won't stop their work until they have found a match for every patient who needs an unrelated transplant.

I sincerely hope that you will consider becoming a potential stem cell donor and support us in inspiring the nation to 'Get On The List'.

Yours sincerely,

YOUR NAME
